This website aims to help the local government(s) in Washington State to prepare a new, or update an existing hazard mitigation plan. Although the site is principally based on FEMA’s ‘Local Mitigation Planning Handbook (2013)’, and Beyond the Basics website hosted by the Coastal Hazards Center and the Center for Sustainable Community Design at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). This site also features additional examples of the best local hazard mitigation plans from Washington State and elsewhere in the U.S.
The users can use this website or FEMA’s handbook in conjunction with the Washington Riskscape Atlas to prepare a high-quality local hazard mitigation plan. Each recommended action that can be easily accomplished using the Riskscape Atlas is denoted with the symbol
We encourage you to review this website and provide feedback. We also invite you to consider submitting examples of risk analysis, policies and other mitigation examples from your own plan that could serve as a model for other communities.
The Nine Tasks
There are nine recommended tasks for developing or updating a local hazard mitigation plan included in the FEMA handbook. Each of the tasks is linked below on this page. While it is recommended that the tasks be completed in the recommended order, a number of tasks can also be completed in tandem.
